5Beware Canadian Buyers
By Huckle
Helmet is just what I expected. I had tried one on at a bike show. Fits perfect, great design. Price is exceptional for a helmet this comfortable, with all the added features - extra face mask, exterior visor control, cutout design at the sides allows for extra peripheral viewing, washable removable lining, light on the back of the helmet, pockets around the ear for wearing earphones. Design on outside is attractive.

Only problem was with shipping. I live in Canada. UPS, the shipper used by the seller, called me when the package arrived in Canada customs and was determined to charge a brokerage fee of 50% of the helmet cost to clear it through customs for me. I went online and discovered that I could self clear at a local customs office. I called back UPS. They said I would have to come to the city that was the point of entry (Vancouver) to clear it through customs. Since I live on Vancouver Island, this would have required a ferry ride and almost a full day of my time to get there and back. I contacted Canada Customs and an agent checked with a manager as well as the customs office in my city and confirmed that I could self clear at my local customs office and UPS was required to send it through to me and give me the paperwork to do so. I called UPS a third time, and they reluctantly agreed to have the helmet forwarded to my city so that I could self clear at the local customs office without paying their brokerage fee and fax me the paperwork. Well no paperwork was faxed, but the helmet showed up at my door delivered by UPS. No customs office after all? ... hmmm...

My research online discovered that this is a common problem with UPS. They earn exorbitant brokerage fees - almost always about 50% of the cost of what you're bringing into Canada. This time they called before they charged me for the brokerage fee. Another time, a package showed up at my door and I was forced to pay the brokerage fee before they would leave the package. I'm waiting to see if a charge appears on my next credit card bill. If not, it would appear that they were able to expedite the package through without charging me the brokerage fee after all. If there is a charge, I'm going to lodge a complaint with Canada Customs and demand a refund from UPS. Bottom line, if this is how UPS does business, sellers should not be using them to ship to Canada. And buyers, be aware of your rights. You should not have to pay brokerage fees.
